Speech Sound Assessment App for EYPs

Welcome to the Speech Sound Assessment App for Early Years Practitioners.
Created in the UK by a certified Speech and Language Therapist currently working in the NHS, the app has been developed as a result of recognising the increase in waiting list times and the move towards paperless versions of assessment. The assessment is an easy speech sound screen which instantly analyses the data and recommends whether further assessment is needed by a speech and language therapist.

It is an articulation and phonology test of English speaking students. It is developed as an informal assessment. It was created to guide early years practitioners as to whether a child’s speech sound system is within the norms expected for his or her age.
Features of EYP version:
-no confusing speech and language therapy jargon
-an option to mark a substitution (e.g. car was said as “tar”) or simply mark that the sound was incorrect.
-an instant report with a summary of the child’s speech sound system and whether that is developmentally appropriate for their age.
-an overview of all the sounds they can or cannot yet use.
-recommendations as to whether the child should be monitored or referred on for professional advice.
-report can be emailed to parents or other professionals.
Ability to record individual words and play back later.

Differences between Speech and Language Therapist version and EYP version:
-Vowels are not included in the EYP version.
-summary includes recommendations for onwards referral in EYP version.
- editable features available only on SLT version.
-SLT version includes phonetic transcription, using International Phonetic Alphabet, whereas EYP version uses letters from the alphabet to avoid confusion.
The assessment has two basic tests, the Quick Screener and the Full Test. The Screener is for quickly screening a student’s articulation skills looking at a few targeted common sounds, while the Full Test provides examples of all sounds in all word positions (including vowels.)
